There are many groups and societies that arrange activities across the Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire area. Some work in partnership with the Menter and some operate completely independently. In order to raise awareness of activities in the area and to increase the numbers that take part in these events, we offer a platform for the groups to advertise their events.
Our Partners

The ‘Cymreigyddion y Fenni’ society maintains Abergavenny’s Welsh cultural and literary traditions. The society meets monthly in the Degwm Centre (Tithe Barn), the town’s Welsh language centre, to listen to guest speakers. Contact post@cymreigyddion.org.uk.

12/01/19 - Hen Galan or Welsh New Year party (Saturday evening), the Mari Lwyd and entertainment from the classical guitarist Rhisiart Arwel.
13/01/19 – Plygain Service, 3:00pm, St Mary’s Priory (Sunday)
02/03/19 – St David’s Party with Criw’r Efail (Saturday evening).
26/03/19 - Stephen Powell: Following the Paths of South Caucasus.
23/04/19 - Jenny Needs: Welsh Language National Corpus.
28/05/19 – Tour of Monmouth’s Blue Plaques with Robin Davies.
25/06/19 - Alun Thomas: Confessions of an Environmental Health Officer
23/07/19 – Tour of Usk, birthplace of the evolutionary biologist Alfred Russel Wallace, with Jeff Davies and Olwen Jones.
The meetings are usually held in the Degwm Centre (Tithe Barn), Monk Street, Abergavenny NP7 5ND at 7.30pm on the fourth Tuesday evening of every month, but please keep an eye out for exceptions!
The aim of Criw’r Efail is to celebrate the Welsh language in Abergavenny and they have established a Welsh Language Centre in the town in partnership with the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The Monmouth Welsh Language Society regularly arranges events. They hold groups to facilitate chats and opportunities to socialise through the medium of Welsh, arrange walking tours and arrange lectures by guest speakers on the culture, literature and history of Wales. The Chepstow Welsh Language Society arranges a programme of events with the support of Menter BGTM and Learn Welsh Gwent. The group meet twice a month – once for an evening of ‘gwerin a chlonc’ (folk and chat) and once to listen to guest speakers. For more information, contact rhys@menterbgtm.cymru.
The Society also runs "Ty Croeso" Chepstow's Welsh language centre and bookshop. There’s more information on Chepstow Welsh Language Society’s website.
The Society’s programme: The Society meet once a month on a Wednesday evening at 19:30 in the Woodfield Arms, 16 Bridge Street, Chepstow, NP16 5EZ.
Folk Club and Chat Club: The Society and Learn Welsh Gwent holds a Folk night (19:00-20:00) and Chat Club (20:00-21:00) once a month on a Thursday evening at the Woodfield Arms, Chepstow.

Abergavenny’s Clwb Gwawr is a group of women of all ages that meets every month to socialise in Welsh. There’s a varied programme of events with meetings on the third Monday of every month. For more information, contact Carys Evans. Membership is £20.

Merched y Wawr members usually meet at 7pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Tithe Barn, Abergavenny NP7 9ND. Contact Ruth Roberts (Secretary) by emailing 1ruthroberts@gmail.com for further information.
Cymraeg for Kids holds groups to encourage new parents to choose a bilingual path for their children by choosing Welsh medium care and education. The groups include Baby Massage which is suitable for babies between 8 and 24 weeks old, Baby Yoga Group which is suitable for babies 10+ weeks old and for babies 16+ weeks old; Story and Song Group which is suitable for children between the ages of 0 and 3. The groups are a great way of increasing confidence in Welsh, learn simple phrases to use with your baby and to make new friends.

There are a number of Welsh language nurseries in the area. You can find a list of the area’s nurseries and contact details below on the posters for the different counties (Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire).
Ti a Fi groups are an opportunity for parents and guardians to play with their children and socialise over a cuppa in a Welsh atmosphere. The groups meet weekly in Beaufort, Tredegar, Usk, Chepstow, Monmouth, Caldicot, Abergavenny, Garndiffaith, Pontypool and New Inn. There are further details on the posters below.
Monmouth – A Welsh language service is held in St Thomas’s Church, Monmouth at 9:30am on a Saturday every other month.
